Wolfing Out? - Easy signs that a person is moving towards 'Wolfing Out'

What does it mean to 'Wolf Out'? My friend, Andrew, forwarded me this picture to describe the transformation one must take when engaging in a Stag Party-like, car camping expedition.

Here are some easy signs that a person is moving towards 'Wolfing Out'.
  1. Learning new freestyle, dance moves, specifically for dancing on cars. Wolves like to dance on cars!
  2. Disappearing into the woods for long periods of time. Wolves like wide open spaces to Wolf Out in!
  3. Shotgunning of beers. Wolves are thirsty!
  4. Devouring meals quickly. Wolves are hungry!
  5. Moving to more primitive communication forms.
  6. Generally acting unruly, especially while riding in cars. Uncontrollable.
  7. Participating in what was referred to as 'Tom Ball'. Any ideas as to what this is?
  8. Many beers go missing from the cooler. Where are they all going?
  9. The subject may be able to dunk a basketball whereas before they couldn't; it could just all be in their head, and they end up with an 'Unidentified Party Injury', because they weren't even anywhere near a basketball court. Mr.Wolf is still okay though, he wolfs on!

I will do more research into this phenomenon known as 'Wolfing Out', and report back to you soon. Enjoy your weekend!

Captain Mudguts - sponsoring a winner!

Recently, DrinkToque.com was approached by Captain Mudguts to sponsor his boat in the upcoming 10th Annual Passage Island Seagull Race. The what? "It's a unique opportunity because it is the only one in the world", he said. "Great, what is it though?", I asked. "I have won the race 6 years out of the last 10", he stated proudly, paused, and then went on to say, "well, there's a bunch of pieced together, modified floating devices, some say boats, with small, somewhat unreliable, engines in them, and we 'race' them around a small island ... slowly. Really, it's just all about having good time". "Great, we're in!", I concluded.

Since we were going to be sponsoring his entry, I thought we should check in on Captain Mudguts' progress this week, take the 'boat' out for a tester run. Well, I have to hand it to him, the boat looks mean. Painted on flames, skull hook; he has taken a canoe and basically turned it into an inboard/outboard boat. "Wow", a little stunned by how motley it was, "does this thing work?", I asked. "Let's get sailing!", exclaimed Captain Mudguts. We put the 'boat' in the water. It floated! Nice start. Engine turned over. Check. Oh, wait a second the 'boat' only goes in reverse. "Ooops, that's not supposed to happen! Wait, we are taking on water! That's not supposed to happen!", exclaimed Captain Mudguts. Oh, wow. As he putted around the little bay, going backwards, I quickly realized this race wasn't about performance, and that the fun wasn't in the winning necessarily; but, as with all good times, it is all the little happenings surrounding the race that makes it all worthwhile, perhaps the 'notes they aren't playing, rather than the ones they are'.

Yeah, this is going to be fun!

Does the engine work? Yes, but the 'boat' only went backwards. Oh dear.

Back to the drawing board - At the Shop. "I think it's something under the hood".

The simple solution - a winning prop!

The key to sponsoring a winner, is finding someone who finds big solutions to small problems, and has fun doing so in the process.

I can't wait for the race on Sunday.

Aye aye Captain Mudguts!

Have fun,

"Don't touch any nozzles in the engine room". You mean ... this one?

When I was younger, and on an airplane, I was always a little jealous of any other kid who got to go see the cockpit of the plane. I had seen it before, but, for some reason, I always wanted to see it again and again. Later in life, I have realized that it wasn't because I overly liked the idea of flying, but more simply because I like large walls of electronics, and multi-coloured blinking lights and stuff. And, I don't even care if all the stuff does anything, I just like the aesthetic of it all.

It was a 3 hour ferry ride to Saltspring Island, I 'forgot' reading material, and was a little anxious to do something interesting. So, when the Boat's Assistant Chief Engineer invited us to go below deck, and see the Engine Room, we were all game. "Don't touch any nozzles in the engine room", he said. It was just like I had imagined it. Noisy, hot, humid, and a wonderful world of overlapping engine parts, wires, electronics, and so forth. Air tight doors, sirens, flashing lights, plenty of other things to bump my head on, and really tight spaces. Sprawling and caverness. Zones of relative calm, mixed with zones of seemingly endless moving parts. And, all were managed through a modern control room. And, judging from the fact I took more pictures of that than anything else, that seems to still be my favourite thing to look at.

Thanks to Jann for showing us around the Engine Room.

Codename : SNAKE Plissken - Escape from Nashville - The Adventures of Hollis Bennett - Part 2

2:00pm, July 22, 2009, status: contemplating 'raising the roof'

Just received another incoherent dispatch from Hollis (http://hollisbennett.com/). He is not sure where he is. Yet, we already know he is in Alaska. He sent some seemingly random test pictures, and asked us to piece it together. "What's my zip code? ", he asks; and then ended with, "Enjoy the riddle". Hollis is up to something, and we are more than willing to play along ...

Codename : SNAKE Plissken - Escape from Nashville - The Adventures of Hollis Bennett - Part 1

12:15am, July 21, 2009, status: still designing a remote control coffee table. no reason.

Hollis is getting his Alaska on, he's a dynamo, and it's getting crazy ... maybe. He caught us up to date in a couple of emails. I am still trying to grasp the full range of what he is trying to say, but I think I get it.

Email #1 : "Off the grid"

a week or so later ...

Email #2 : "So, ... I think the problem was that I was drinking so much that I didn't ... have my camera ".

His email then veered off into incoherent ramblings of a man apparently possessed with the idea of nude wrestling a grizzly bear. Why nude? He didn't say, and is that even the weirdest part of that anyways? I have heard of gold fever, but this was seemingly a no win situation. You know, he has only been up there for a few weeks. Hopefully the grizzly fever wears off a bit.

The bartender told him that Alaskan legend says, if you kiss the bear paw they keep behind the bar, and then do a shot, you will have good fortune in finding a bear the locals call Frankie. Now, this sounds weird, but considering I have kissed a dead toe while drinking at the
Sourdough Saloon in Dawson City, Yukon, I can actually believe it. Or, it could be a total rouse. It's crazy like that up there.

Hollis was told that after kissing the bear paw, he must walk alone for two days into the wilderness. Frankie will meet him out there. Hmmm, visions of Into the Wild have filled my brain, and I am also reminded of a story of an acquaintance who went 'moose hunting', and simply disappeared for 6 years.

But, this is what his trip is all about, the unknown, adventure, and wherever the photographs take him. A bar, a car ride to 'nowhere', a fishing boat to somewhere; where will he be next?

The Drink Toque, helps you slay Coors Lights and 2.5 ounce shots in an Alaskan bar . . . wait, wait, wait, they drink LIGHT beer in Alaska???

(I wonder what all those bumper stickers say behind the bar? Also, mental note: I like colourful straws. Buy some.)

Moose Attack looking right at home in an Alaskan bar.

So, Hollis, uh..., are you going outside at all? Like, Alaska is a big place.

Over the next few weeks, we will be featuring the photographs from Nashville-based photographer Hollis Bennett (www.hollisbennett.com), as he travels deep deep deep undercover between Alaska and Tennessee. He will be carrying a few Drink Toques to keep his tasty beverages cold and looking good. Follow along with us as we share his pictures, stunningly random thoughts, concerns about the reliability of his car, and so forth.

Safe travels Hollis!

"I like it hot. Can you make me sweat?"

Some recent email inquiries :

"$10 says you can't make me say Wee-Oww"

"Red Rover Red Rover, can you send me something H-O-T over?"

"I like it hot. Can you make me sweat?"

Thank you for the inquiries, the answer is ... YES, I think we can help you out!

Drinks, Drink Toques, BBQ, what's missing? ... Hot Sauce!?

Heat it up with some hot sauce, wash it down with a cold drink to Drink Toque combo.

There are many, many hot sauce recipes out there. Check out http://www.pepperfool.com/recipes/hotsauce_idx.html to get a quick idea of the variety.

Below is a hot sauce recipe that has been our favourite for many years. Consistently delicious, and easy to make. Looking over other hot sauce recipes, this one appears to be a combination of traditional habanero hot sauces and a tropical hot sauce (generally means it uses fruit in it, I guess). Impress your friends and make this hot sauce. You won't be sorry!

The Drink Toque's favourite hot sauce (from The Drink Toque's Essentials BBQ Collection ... originally maybe even off a can of fruit I think)

2-15 Habaneros (# depends on the heat factor you are going for. I go with about 8)
1 15oz canned Pineapples (I like pineapples the best, but you can also substitute with peaches, mangos, apricots, or papayas; canned or whole)
1/2 cup yellow mustard
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup dark molasses
1 cup distilled vinegar
1 tablespoon cumin
1 teaspoon mixed pickling spices (may substitute with 1/2tsp ginger, 1/4 tsp allspice, 1/2tsp coriander)
2 tablespoons canning salt
s tablespoons chili powder
1 tablespoon black pepper

Instructions:

1. Blend fruit. (If you are using whole fruit, peel and slice fruit first)
2. Add habaneros. Blend.
3. Add all other ingredients. Blend
4. Bottle sauce, cork it, and let it age for a minimum of a week. (You can actually use it right away, but the longer you leave it bottle, the better it tastes.)

* Note: If you are using 'pickling spices', they should be placed in a cheese cloth bag and simmered in the vinegar for 20 minutes, or grind spices to a powder. Alternatively, use the substitute mix listed in recipe, which is what I do because I am lazy like that, and it works out great all the same.

Try it out, and let us know how it goes. Happy BBQing!

Lisa's Backyard BBQ and Horseshoe FunFest, K Town style!

Is there a better way to spend a special birthday Saturday than BBQing and playing horseshoes with friends? The only way this scenario could have turned out wrong was a mistake in their choice of birthday cake ... which I believe is impossible. Perfect Saturday!

Backyard BBQs and horseshoe games, where the Drink Toques roam. Moose Attack, keeping it real. Pass the chips.

He looks so intense in this one. He wants it it bad. This has Ringer written all over it! (Truthfully, I don't think he was even throwing a horseshoe. Like, where did it go, straight up? Did he just kill a bird with that shot? ... All I am saying is ... I think I could take this guy in a game of horseshoes.)

Ronald phones home. A fuzzy photo for a fuzzy night.

Ronald likes horseshoe party's. We like Ronald. A fuzzy photo from Ronald's fuzzy Saturday night.

This isn't the best photo you will ever see, but in context, it's hilarious. And, the effort and his 'explanation' deserves a posting. These are the text emails preempting this photo:

10:11pm "Pushed the Drink Toq ue hard at our horsehoe party"

10:12pm "Took f cool pics"

10:34pm "Ps shut faced been yelling about Drink Toq ue all night"

10:36pm "Deubjbg"

What's that?

10:37pm "Its s chinese god im branching out"

10:45pm "I feel lje this is thing..."

K town going off tonight!

10:46 "I am good"

Thanks Ronald. We appreciate the literal shout outs! Hope you didn't get hit in the head with the horseshoes or anything, and made it home safe.

Pic-a-nic in the Park, making a Sunday a SUMMER SUNDAY!

Joined some friends for a Pic-a-nic in the Park on Sunday. Good friends, sandies, salads, cakes, cookies, BBQ chicken, watermelon, drinks, and Drink Toques! What Summer Sundays are all about.

Some people just kept it mellow.

Some warmed it up with Mini-Nerf Football Mega Ruckus 2009, JET vs CSI, a winner takes all, mini-nerf football battle. The opposing team played a strong, fast snapping, running game; but we didn't panic, waited them out, and stuck to our passing game. With the score tied, and 'next point wins' on the line, our side connected with one the most beautiful mini-nerf pass combos I have ever seen. Touchdown! Victory is sweet.

A good time had by all. A great way to spend a Sunday. Thanks everyone!

Sarah enjoying the view.
